Pret opened in London in 1986. College friends, Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham, made proper sandwiches using natural, preservative-free ingredients. They created the sort of food they craved but couldn’t find anywhere else.

Pret operates a bit like a restaurant. in that every Pret shop has its own kitchen (except for one or two of the tiny ones) where they make their sandwiches and salads fresh every day. What they haven’t sold at the end of the day gets donated to charity. In Nottingham this is The Salvation Army.
